Chatham Saw Mill – Asia’s Oldest Sawmill in the Heart of Port Blair

Located on the tiny Chatham Island just a short drive from central Port Blair, Chatham Saw Mill is more than a working timber yard—it’s a walk through the industrial and colonial history of the Andaman Islands. Established by the British in 1883, this mill has processed some of the finest tropical hardwoods for over a century. As you explore its massive cutting machines, timber storage yards, and the attached wood museum, you’ll witness the transformation of raw logs into finely crafted wood, much like it was done decades ago. The mill also bears silent witness to history—it was bombed during World War II and rebuilt, adding to its layered past. Surrounded by sea on all sides, Chatham Island offers a rare mix of industry, history, and island charm.
